There was a contest
For the local singers
Down by the yellow river
I had the one I loved with me
The day we drove
A sunbeam hit the hood
She shook her head
I knew she understood
Far away in the desert
Somewhere
Lays a broken dream
Passed the creek
And out of nowhere land
This looming hotel appeared
I felt my shattered dreams
Vanished in the air
Filled my lounges with love
She whispered softly
“Where are all my cares?
I feel so good I feel so free”
It must have been
A million cars outside
The butler bowed
And he shook my hand
“Moaning man and moaning girl Welcome
There is room for all of you
And all the others too
Dinner will be served at eight
Now, remember
To close the garden gate”
In the dimmed light we sat
And heard one of the guest’s
Complained
And the butler responded
By singing a song
14 verses long
“This one goes to the lost souls
Those who have fallen into the black
Those who let the door open
And didn’t know their way back
Because you’ve fallen into the black Fallen into the black of day
You’ve fallen into the black
Fallen into the black of day
Into the black of day…”
